Workshop Series for the Home Gardener with Dr. Joseph Novak

Dr. Novak, Ph.D., has a doctorate from Cornell University and served on the faculty of Texas A&M University, where he created the area of sociohorticulture. He is now serving as the Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden Director. Since 2014, he has been an adjunct professor and lecturer in the Biosciences Department at Rice, where he teaches BIOS 204, advises students in special project activities, and is a faculty sponsor of the Rice Urban Agriculture Club.

Plant Propagation for Fun and Fundraising

Saturday, February 10th, 8:30-11:30 AM

In this workshop, participants will learn how to start plants from seeds, cuttings, and layers. We will review the techniques, tools, and media to propagate healthy plants successfully.

Each participant will make a small propagation chamber of cuttings and start plants from seeds using two techniques. Each participant will also do an air layer on a fig tree in the garden.

Herb Garden in a Container - SOLD OUT

Saturday, March 2nd, 8:30-11:30 AM

In this workshop, participants will learn about common herbs and how to propagate and grow them. Each participant will plant a 6-gallon pot with five herbs to take home.

Participants will also learn to make simple snacks and teas from fresh herbs. Among the herbs to be discussed will be basil, bay leaf, cilantro/coriander, common chives, dill, fennel, garlic chives/Chinese leeks, ginger, lemon grass, mints, marjoram, Mexican mint marigold, oregano, papalo, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, and turmeric.

Six Ways to Make Compost in the Garden

Saturday, March 23rd, 8:30-11:30 AM

In this workshop, we will discuss the importance of making compost and the roles that compost plays in a healthy garden. We will examine the two basic compost procedures – aerobic and anaerobic composting. Participants will work with six methods of making compost in the home garden – two types of compost bins, a compost heap, sheet composting, pit composting, and vermicomposting. This workshop will also instruct on when compost is ready to be used and the best ways to use compost.

Each workshop is limited to 20 participants.

The Garden has moved! We are now located on the north side of the Gibbs Recreation Center in between the basketball courts and O'Connor Field.

Parking

Guests visiting the Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden who do not already have a parking spot on campus may use the North Annex Lot near Entrance 20 for a charge of $1.00 per 10 minutes with a maximum of $12.00 per day, this lot offers the first 20 minutes as a grace period. While North Annex Lot is the closest to the Garden, several other options for visitor parking are available. The Central Campus Garage and West Lot 2 near Entrances 20 and 18, respectively, are available for a charge of $1.00 per 10 minutes, with a maximum cost of $12.00 per day. The Greenbriar Lot is available for a charge of $3 per day and can be accessed through Entrance 13a or 13b.

Credit cards are the only acceptable form of payment for these lots (American Express, VISA, MasterCard, Discover; debit cards are not accepted). Visitor Lots on the Rice Campus
